Bettie Joan “BJ” Hagers, Stillwater native and Tulsa resident, age 81, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 in Tulsa.
Her memorial service will be 9 a.m, Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at the Cremation Society Chapel located at 2103 E. 3rd Street, Tulsa, OK 74104.
Born to Harry and Josephine (Johns) Hagers Feb 11, 1931, Joan graduated from Stillwater High School in 1949. She attended Oklahoma A & M, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and graduated in 1953 with a degree in art. She then moved to Tulsa, working in sales with Scott-Rice office supplies. Joan also worked for Ackerman Advertising in sales and ad design, but finished her long business career back with Scott-Rice. She was a long-time member and officer in the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), where she mentored many young business women.
BJ led an active life. She traveled around the world and was a champion fencer. She was a supporter of the Tulsa Zoo and loved animals, especially her dogs Brandee, Murphee, and Beau. After retirement, she turned to her passion for friends, dance, and theater as a longtime member of “The Happy Hoofers” senior dance troupe, where she performed in the annual Tulsa Red Glove Revue.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, by her beloved twin sister, Nettie Jean (George) Mahoney, and her lifetime friend Onita “Jackie” Shipley.
She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Chabrak, of Titusville, Fla.; three nieces, Jean Sibley, Kathy Thompson, and Siobhan Foreman; two nephews, Kevin Mahoney and Tom Chabrak; many loving grand-nieces and nephews, and countless wonderful friends.
Friends and family may contribute in BJ’s name to the Tulsa Zoo, the Humane Society of the U.S. or a charity of their choice.
