OUR VIEW: Honor dad on his special day

STILLWATER, Okla. — Today is dad’s special day.

It’s Father’s Day in the United States.

Each year, on the third Sunday of June, Americans pause to recognize and honor our fathers.

Our fathers taught us how to throw a baseball, bait a hook, track a deer, deliver a speech, read a book and many, many other things.

We set this day aside to wish them well on their special day.

Honoring our dads on this special day can come in many forms.

For some, that means attending a baseball game with dad, or maybe getting out the rod and reel for a fishing trip. For others, Father’s Day is celebrated by a backyard barbecue with dad working his magic at the grill.

For many families, dads do not live nearby. But even though many miles may separate you, remember to pick up the phone and wish your dad a happy Father’s Day.

Many dads are serving in the military and are away from family. Service to their country has taken them away, but calling or communicating online is a good way to wish them well on their special day.

Some of our fathers are now grandfathers, even great-grandfathers. Nothing would make them feel better and appreciated than contacting them and wishing them a great Father’s Day.

Father’s Day also is celebrated by step-fathers, and for good reason. Though not a biological father to a child, a step-father is a father figure.

In many families, dads have passed away, and many people will be thinking about special times with their late father. Take a moment to share his stories with friends and family, spend time doing what your dad enjoyed doing or visit his gravesite and sit quietly, reflecting on your dad on Father’s Day.

To all the dads out there, happy Father’s Day.
