OUR VIEW: Stillwater is losing a landmark

STILLWATER, Okla. — You may have picked up a dozen roses for your Valentine. You may have purchased a nice flower arrangement for Mother’s Day. You may have worked with staff on a comprehensive floral expression for a wedding. Or you may have just stopped by to smell the flowers.

But chances are, many Stillwater residents have had some occasion to shop at Colonial Florist, a Stillwater institution for 52 years. Stillwater will be losing a landmark when the local florist shop closes its doors for good next week. You don’t stay in business and flourish for more than five decades without providing great service to your customers.

Stillwater residents have gotten a chance to meet the candidates for a City Council seat with a couple of forums. The League of Women Voters held a forum Thursday, and the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce held another one Friday morning.

The forums are an effort to inform voters of where the candidates stand on the issues so they can be informed voters at the ballot booth.

Hopefully, Stillwater voters took advantage of the opportunity.

The Travelocity Roaming Gnome rolled into Stillwater on Friday as a sponsor for ESPN College GameDay, which is in town to broadcast before the Oklahoma State Cowboys take on the Kansas Jayhawks.

According to his handler, the Roaming Gnome is favoring the Cowboys to win because of homecourt advantage. Let’s hope he’s right.
