OUR VIEW: Tradition continues at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. — A time-honored tradition was revisited this week on the Oklahoma State University campus.

Just as students before them have done for the last 30 years, current OSU students took a break from finals week to feast on free pancakes and drinks at the annual Late Night Cafe event in the Student Union.

The tradition that began more than three decades ago by OSU officials is a special gesture by the faculty and staff at Oklahoma State.

It’s a tip of the cap to hard-working – and hungry – students who are in the mental grind of finals week.

Late Night Cafe is popular with book-weary students because it’s free and conveniently located in the Student Union.

In 1896, the graduating class was comprised of a total of six students.

There will be considerably more walking the stage today at the Oklahoma State University spring undergraduate commencement ceremonies at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

There will be three commencements today, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Subsequent undergraduates will walk the stage at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Dr. Tererai Trent will be the featured speaker at the undergraduate ceremonies. Trent came from a poor background in Africa to earn her bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in 2001 and a master’s degree at Oklahoma State in 2003.

She then earned her doctorate in 2009 at Western Michigan University.

Trent would go on to lead the effort to begin the Tinogona Foundation to build, repair and renovate schools in her homeland.
