OUR VIEW: Swimming teams earn respect

STILLWATER, Okla. — In a busy sports city like Stillwater, swimming can sometimes get overlooked.

“Major” sports like football, basketball, wrestling and baseball attract the most fans and get the most attention.

Reports of their games and matches are chronicled comprehensively in the media.

“Minor” sports often get pushed to the back pages. But when “minor” sport athletes achieve at the highest level, their success needs to be heralded.

“Minor” sports aren’t minor to those athletes competing in them, and that was apparent by the elation of the Stillwater High School swimming teams after a fantastic run in the recent state high school swimming meet in Edmond.

The Pioneers edged Altus by five points to capture the Class 5A state championship, Stillwater’s first boys championship since 1974.

The Pioneers also proved that not only are they good swimmers, but classroom rock stars as well, winning the Class 5A academic state crown.

The Lady Pioneers deserve recognition as well after their performance at the Edmond Schools Aquatic Center, rallying for second place, the third straight year the girls finished in the runners-up position.

Swimming is not an easy sport and requires hours and hours of solitary training. Stillwater coach Kurt Goebel and his dedicated swimmers should be applauded for putting in the time and effort to achieve such hard-earned success — in the pool and in the classroom.
