OUR VIEW: Happy 100th, and many more

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahomans have benefited for 100 years by a legislative act at the outset of the 20th century.

In 1914, the Smith-Lever Act was passed that established a system of cooperative extension services in the land-grant university system.

For 100 years, county residents have been the recipients of research-based information and programs in agriculture, family and consumer science, 4-H, youth development and economic development.

The Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service has lived by its motto of “bringing the university to you” by making information available to county residents that can enhance their lives.

The extension service is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and extension educators hope county residents show up for the birthday party on Friday.

There will be a celebration for Payne County Extension Service at the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza in Perkins beginning at 5 p.m.

There will be a homemade ice cream contest and a tug of war challenge between the Perkins Fire Department and the Perkins Police Department. Homemade pies and hot dogs will be available for purchase, and there will be a petting zoo for the children.

The public is invited to participate in demonstrations and take guided tours through the historic buildings in the plaza. And don’t forget to have your picture  taken with OSU mascot Pistol Pete on the front porch of the home of the real Frank Eaton.

The centennial theme is “Expanding Knowledge and Changing Lives,” and that mission statement will not stop even though the extension service is 100 years old.

For more information about extension service information and programs, call 405-747-8320.
