OUR VIEW: Relay for Life a success in Stillwater and Cushing

STILLWATER, Okla. — Payne County residents proved once again that they have philanthropic hearts, even when the spring weather does not cooperate.

The cities of Stillwater and Cushing recently held Relay for Life, a fundraising event in support of the American Cancer Society.

Both cities surpassed goals in money raised.

Stillwater raised $1,000 more than its goal of $125,000, while Cushing topped its goal of raising $80,000.

In Stillwater, approximately 400 people participated in the event. Twenty-five teams were involved, including the Stillwater Survivors Team which raised a whopping $27,963.28.

Event officials said money raised by the Stillwater Survivors Team should rank among the top 10 teams in the state of Oklahoma.

The Stillwater team included Roy Bays, who raised a staggering $10,040.60 by himself.

In Cushing, the Drumright Dental Center team raised $20,479.22 to lead the way. Travis Burkett was the top individual fundraiser with $6,725.

Inclement spring weather stalled the events in Stillwater and Cushing, but organizers were pleased with the results. And they should be.

Cancer survivors and their families, as well as the families of those who have been impacted by cancer, always turn out by the hundreds in support of Relay for Life.

Money raised at Relay for Life goes to a good cause.

Seventy-two percent of the money raised goes toward programs and services offered by the American Cancer Society.

The fundraisers were once again a huge success in Stillwater and Cushing. Let’s hope the tradition continues for many years to come, perhaps to that day when Relay for Life fundraisers are no longer necessary.
