Whiddon leads OSU Cowgirls to 8-2 victory over North Texas
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State Cowgirls pitcher Anna Whiddon didn’t look at a scouting report prior to Wednesday’s home opener against North Texas.
Turns out, she didn’t need to as Whiddon delivered a one-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over the Mean Green. Whiddon struck out eight over six innings, improving to 8-2.
“North Texas is a team we should beat, hands down,” Whiddon said.” I just went into the game, thinking about going after every hitter and getting them out every single time.”
Whiddon didn’t come back for the seventh inning after coming up limping in the sixth inning after sliding on the mound. Kat Espinosa came on in relief to finish the game.
“She’ll be fine,” coach Rich Wieligman said. “I wasn’t going to take chances, so I gave Kat an inning in there at the end of the game and let her finish the game.”
The Cowgirl offense struggled early, but four errors by North Texas led to three unearned runs for the Cowgirls. The offense came alive in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on Katelyn Bright’s three-run double and Julie Ward’s RBI double down the right field line.
Wieligman attributed his team’s struggles to not adjusting quick enough to pitching styles. In OSU’s 9-4 loss Saturday to No. 1 Washington, the Cowgirls faced Danielle Lawrie, who Wieligman considers one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the game.
Wednesday, they faced North Texas pitcher Ashley Lail, who doesn’t throw as hard as Lawrie, but has effective off-speed pitches.
“We muttled through the first few innings, I will say,” Wieligman said. “I told somebody that when you face Nolan Ryan, then you turn around and face Tommy John, that you have a problem. That’s what we basically did. It took us a while to adjust, and I’d like us to make a better adjustment quicker, but, they battled through it.”
OSU has got back on track since dropping four out of five at the LSU Tiger Classic on Feb. 19. The Cowgirls have won five out of six, and are back in the top 25 for the first time since 2004. OSU is ranked No. 24 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, and No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Poll
“That was definitely a big step,” Whiddon said. “The first weekend at LSU wasn’t so hot, but beating those ranked teams (then-No. 13 California) at Palm Springs was a big deal for us. Being ranked for the first time this season is awesome.”
