Cushing native wins Outstanding Student Representative title
Jared Robert Whittington, a senior majoring in applied sociology, led the College of Arts and Sciences in the student processional at Oklahoma State University’s commencement ceremonies on Saturday.
Whittington was chosen to lead the processional because of his outstanding academic and community achievements. As the leader of the processional, he wore an honorary orange cap and gown while carrying the college gonfalon.
The grand march, an OSU tradition in which graduates of each college walk from their reception area to the graduation ceremony, was led by Whittington and College of Arts and Sciences Dean Peter M.A. Sherwood.
“I am incredibly gracious for all OSU has done for me and it was an honor to represent a college and institution that I love,” Whittington said.
Whittington is a native of Cushing and a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He recently was selected as a Marshall Scholarship Finalist. Whittington transferred to OSU following military service.
He later established “The Forgotten Warriors Program” and developed a local program to aid transitioning veterans. In 2008, he was one of 51 students in the nation to participate in the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship Student Congress. In July, he participated in the Army ROTC Leadership Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he earned overall excellence rating and was rated in the top five cadets in his platoon.
Whittington was a finalist in the Elie Weisel Essay in Ethics competition for an essay titled “Killing and the Military Ethic.”
He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Delta, which is the sociology honor society. He was named an OSU Senior of Significance, a Top Ten Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and an Outstanding Senior in the OSU department of sociology.
