Forestry professor wins Regents teaching award
Every year a faculty member from each college at Oklahoma State University is recognized for an unusually significant and meritorious achievement in the instruction of undergraduate and graduate student for a significant period of years with the Regents Distinguished Teaching Award.
This year’s recipient for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources was Tom Hennessey, forestry professor in the department of natural resource ecology and management.
“I nominated Tom for this award based on his long record of teaching excellence at OSU. He has been with OSU since 1976,” NREM department head Keith Owens said. “Tom is always willing to help with any teaching or advising issues in the department.”
The award was created at the request of the OSU Board of Regents. Each college accepts nominations and reviews support materials internally before submitting the top nominations for consideration by a university-wide committee.
“I believe teachers and advisers have a unique opportunity to shape the lives of students for the betterment of society,” Hennessey said. ‘This opportunity transcends the weekly passage of technical information from professor to student to include all those characteristics embodied in the term ‘professionalism.’”
Throughout his time at OSU, Hennessey has taught six different courses and has focused on two specific courses for the last four years. Silvics and Silviculture, which is co-taught with Rodney Will, NREM associate professor, and Forest Ecophysiology are both required classes in the forestry curriculum, but are also popular selections by students as electives.
“He teaches a difficult subject but the students always rate him very highly,” Owens said of Hennessey. “He has also been instrumental in establishing and maintaining our urban and community forestry option.”
