Oklahoma State to launch instructional internship program in Democratic Republic of the Congo

STILLWATER, Okla. — An Oklahoma State University program that seeks to build a relationship with a university in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be under way next week.

Next fall, OSU’s Master’s of International Agriculture program will begin sending students to teach as instructional interns at Katanga Methodist University in the province of Katanga in southern D.R. Congo.

Shida Henneberry, the director of the OSU program, said she and Ed Long of Stillwater, a former state senator, will be leaving Monday on a visit for the university to establish the program. The program will send its first instructional intern to Katanga in the fall, Henneberry said.

The idea for the program was largely Long’s brainchild. Long visited D.R. Congo, formerly known as Zaire, in 2005, he said. While there, he saw a country that was rich in natural resources but had no good means for capitalizing on them.

Long said he’s been impressed with Henneberry’s students and the reason they’re interested in international agriculture. The students are almost universally interested in making a positive impact, and see agriculture as a way to do it, he said.

“They want to make a difference in the world,” he said.
