STILLWATER, Okla. —
Morgan Hoffmann made quick work of building on his small one-stroke lead Saturday at the Utah Championship in Sandy, Utah.
Then storms stalled him — just slightly — and a rough back nine forced him to lose hold of his lead at the Web.com Tour event. Hoffmann finished his round with a 1-over 72.
The former Oklahoma State golfer birdied the par 5 first hole before officials suspended play for an hour as storms rolled through the area. Hoffmann had to deal with a late-afternoon storm on Friday, as well — which in part led to him bogeying his second to last hole of the second round.
The two-time Big 12 individual champion dealt with the weather better on Saturday as he went right out and birdied No. 2, a par 3, to take a three-stroke lead. Hoffmann relinquished a stroke two holes later when he bogeyed No. 4 — a par 3 hole which he birdied each of his first two rounds of the tournament — which gave him just a one-stroke lead at the time.
The ex-Cowboy picked the stroke back up with a birdie on the par 3 No. 8 to make the turn at 2-under — and still just a one-stroke advantage thanks to Edmond native Robert Streb making a move up the leaderboard.
Streb, a Kansas State graduate, pulled even with Hoffmann on the back nine thanks to a string of three straight birdies to cap off a five-hole stretch of collecting four birdies.
Hoffmann exchanged a bogey and a birdie on the 12th and 13th holes before recording his third bogey of the day on No. 16. It got even worse for Hoffmann on the final hole of the day when he double bogeyed the par 3 18th to drop to seven strokes behind the leader.
By day's end, Hoffmann and Streb would be looking up at Michael Putnam, who shot an 8-under 63 for the low round of the day — thanks to five-straight birdies on the back nine — to take a four-stroke lead over Streb in second.
There are 12 golfers within seven strokes of the leaders — including Tryone Van Aswegan, a graduate of Oklahoma City University.
Also still playing Saturday at the Utah Championship was Casey Wittenberg, who has two Web.com Tour wins this season. The ex-Cowboy shot an even-par 71 in the third round to remain at 3-under and in a tie for 56th.
The conclusion of the final round of the Utah Championship will be televised Sunday on The Golf Channel beginning at 6 p.m.
U.S. Senior Open
In the third round of the U.S. Senior Open Championship at Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion, Mich., former OSU golfer Bob Tway struggled to a 2-over 72 to fall to 5-over and a tie for 52nd.
