STILLWATER, Okla. —
It happens every year. A player goes to the mandatory year of college before bolting for the big money and NBA contract.
After playing Baylor’s Brittney Griner for the last three seasons, Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said at Monday’s press conference that it’s time for women’s basketball to get the same treatment that the men do.
“It seems like (she’s been here for) about eight to 10 years,” Littell said. “Thank God she’s graduating and moving on. I’m really upset that we don’t have that rule like the NBA that you can come out any time that you want. I think there’s something wrong with our system when we allow the men to come out in one year, but we don’t allow Brittney Griner to come out in one year.”
No doubt Littell isn’t alone in that regards. Littell said there are probably eight other coaches in the conference that would agree with him — the only one in disagreement would be Baylor coach Kim Mulkey.
“If we take a vote, I think my idea is going to win,” Littell said.
Griner may be the most dominant player in women’s basketball history, and will no doubt get her shot in the WNBA, but for now she hopes to lead Baylor back to a national championship.
