Stillwater Sports Minute: Brittney Martin gets first taste of Big 12 play

STILLWATER, Okla. — When Oklahoma State University freshman Brittney Martin signed with the Cowgirls, she had an inkling of what she was getting into.

Three games into the conference season, Martin now knows the definition of what it means to play in the Big 12 — and she likes it.

“I should have got the feel the first game and of course the second game had to be Baylor,” Martin said. “I feel like I’m getting the hang of how to play in college instead of coming from high school. I feel like I’m getting it more.”

Martin struggled against Texas Tech and Baylor, but showed that she is learning by tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds against Kansas — all with Kansas’ 6-foot-3-inch senior Carolyn Davis looming in the pain.

“At the beginning, the coaches told us that she was really good,” Martin said. “She plays good defense underneath and she’s not looking to block shots. I kind of just had to go in there and think that she wasn’t going to block my shot and shoot over her. It was scary at first, but it’s something I have to adjust to and I have to try at least.”

Davis’ size may have intimidated Martin — who came to Oklahoma State after playing the post for most of her senior year in high school — but after facing Baylor’s 6-foot-8 Brittney Griner Sunday, going up against Davis was a breeze.

“That’s just something else,” Martin said. “Don’t take it inside on that, that’s all I can tell you. But yeah, it helped having gone up against (Griner) because it makes me put a little more arc on my shots.”
