STILLWATER, Okla. —
With just six scholarship athletes suited up Saturday, Oklahoma State nearly pulled off the unimaginable — an upset of No. 6 Baylor.
The last time the two teams met, the Bears blew out OSU by 41 points in Waco, Texas. This time, the crowd at Gallagher-Iba Arena saw a much better game, though the Cowboys still came up short 64-60.
“I think we made a statement, but I wish we could play them one more time, so we could maybe get the win,” OSU’s Brian Williams said. “They beat us by 41 last time, and we didn’t play our best ball. We didn’t play our best ball tonight, but the effort was there, so I feel good about this one.”
Williams had plenty to feel good about, too.
The redshirt freshman guard from Baton Rouge, La., had a lot to do with the Cowboys keeping it close. Williams scored a career-high 23 points to lead all scorers — with 14 of his points coming in the second half.
“Brian did a great job of putting the ball in the hole. He did a great job of not just shooting 3-pointers, but of driving and making some plays around the basket,” OSU coach Travis Ford said. “I thought he played good defense, as well. He guarded a couple different guys on their team. It was probably one of his better complete games and just really competed.”
OSU played without freshman Cezar Guerrero, who was suspended for violating a team policy. With his suspension and Philip Jurick’s lingering foot injury, the Cowboys suited up just six scholarship players (excluding Christien Sager, a freshman walk-on who was awarded a one-season scholarship).
Oklahoma State will host Iowa State, which beat the Cowboys in Ames, Iowa, on a bank 3-pointer at the buzzer earlier this year, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
