STILLWATER, Okla. —
With one of the most prominent women's college soccer programs in the nation situated in Stillwater, perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that an Oklahoma-based team in the Women's Premier Soccer League has qualified for the WPSL Championships.
The Oklahoma FC, which will compete in the WPSL final four Saturday in Pensacola, Fla., has four players on its roster with Oklahoma State ties and another player who will be a senior at Stillwater High School.
Three of the female soccer players are former OSU players — Yolanda Odenyo Thomas, Colleen Dougherty and Melinda Mercado — while Madison Mercado, is a freshman midfielder/forward for the Cowgirl soccer squad. The SHS representative on the squad is Chablee Sanders.
The WPSL is a national league with more than 70 teams and is the largest national women's soccer league in the world including those in the WPSL Elite. The league is sanctioned by the United State Adult Soccer Association as an affiliate of the United State Soccer Federation.
Oklahoma FC won the Big Sky-South Conference tournament and is heading to its second final four in three season. Oklahoma FC is headed to Pensacola, Fla., after to an overtime victory clinched a berth to the WPSL championship.
The Oklahoma FC squad also has several University of Oklahoma players that are key contributers on the squad — former OU player Caitlin Mooney and Dria Hampton, who transfered to Florida State to play her final year of college soccer. Mooney is one of the top goal scorers on the team with 11 goals, while also tallying five assists.
Mooney scored one of two goals in extra time Thursday night to give Oklahoma FC (11-1-2) a 4-2 victory over visiting American Eagles Soccer Club, from Irving, Texas.
Oklahoma FC takes six-game winning and nine-game unbeaten steaks into the WPSL final four. The Oklahoma squad has outscored its opponents 33-11 during the stretch.
Oklahoma FC will take on Aztec MA (9-1-1) in the first semifinal game at 3 p.m. Saturday. The winner will take on the winner of the Gulf Coast Texans and Salt Lake United matchup.
