Stillwater Sports Minute: Bedlam just another match for Caldwell

NORMAN, Okla. — Sunday’s Bedlam match was a bit of a homecoming for Oklahoma State junior Tyler Caldwell. His first two college seasons, he wrestled as part of the Sooners. Sunday he oppossed them. Caldwell, ranked third in the 165-pound weight class faced Oklahoma’s Buddy Graham, who was ranked sixth.

The former Sooner was greeted with some jeers as he took the mat. The match went back-and-forth, Caldwell forced overtime with his riding time. 23 seconds later, Caldwell’s first Bedlam dual was over. For him, it wasn’t as big of a deal.

“I just took it as another match,” Caldwell said. “Had the mindset coming in that it could be a tough match and be close if I allowed to be. I tried to not let the crowd or emotions get to me. ... Really I didn’t compete where I wanted to be. I grinded it out and got the ‘W’ so that’s what’s important.”

Caldwell said he and Graham weren’t teammates.

“We were never on a team together,” Caldwell said. “He transferred in after I left.”

Caldwell won’t have to face his Norman foes until the Big 12 Dual Finals on March 8.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
