Officially, the Oklahoma State Cowboys haven’t started game planning for the season opener on Sept. 5 in Boone Pickens Stadium against the Georgia Bulldogs.
But that’s not to say that Georgia red isn’t a prevailing theme as the Cowboys enter the second week of fall camp. With the opener still over three weeks away, the Bulldogs aren’t too far away in everybody’s minds, especially those who played in the 35-14 loss to Georgia two years ago in Athens, Ga.
“For me being a verteran that I am I kind of understand what’s coming to me now,” OSU senior corneback Perrish Cox said. “I understand the whole atmosphere and I tell the other players, ‘we’re going into a big game, we did this two years ago against Georgia at their stadium.’ And we know this is going to be a nationwide game so I’m better prepared this time.”
OSU coach Mike Gundy said game planning will start about two weeks out from the contest. Inbetween, though, are at least two scrimmages and plenty of practice time.
OSU senior linebacker Andre Sexton said for him there’s even more of an overriding feeling about the first game.
“We’ve been hungry, anxious to get back out there because we ended our bowl game on a bad note,” he said. “Right now we’re anxious to get back out there and get another win under belt and we know how much momentum this game can carry into the Big 12 season and doing what we’re trying to accomplish, and that’s the Big 12 championship.”
Thursday marked the Cowboys’ second and last two-a-days practice. OSU will practice today and hold a closed scrimmage Satuday from 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The team will then have two days, including Monday when the fall semester starts.
OSU gets a linebacker
Rivals.com is reporting that Missourity City, Texas, linebacker Shaun Lewis verbally committed to the Cowboys Thursday morning.
Lewis, who plays for Fort Bend Hightower High School, is ranked as the No. 30 linebacker in the state of Texas and had offers from 12 schools, including Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M;, Miami, Fla., Florida, LSU, Alabama, UCLA and Notre Dame.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker said he wanted to make a decision before his senior season started.
Lewis marks the second linebacker prospect from Texas to commit to OSU.
In March 6-foot-3, 203-pound linebacker Stephen Maeweather decided on the Cowboys over Missouri, Arkansas, UCLA, Texas Tech, Purdue and Houston.
