STILLWATER, Okla. —
Wrestlers at any level face a challenge before they meet their foe on the mat — they have to make weight.
This season, Oklahoma State University wrestlers Jordan Oliver and Tyler Dorrell are switching weights. Oliver is moving up from 133 pounds to 149 pounds. Dorrell slimmed down to 125 pounds after wrestling at 133.
“For Dorrell, it’s more about intake,” coach John Smith said. “He has to be responsible with his calorie count and keeping his distance up in running. There’s a lot more to think about when you are managing your weight.
“For Oliver, he moved up two weights. He has to make sure he maintains a high calorie count rather than a low calorie count. Through these workouts, it’s really easy to lose weight, he needs to be eating three full meals a day and several snacks in between.”
Dorrell said he really had to change his diet and put a lot of work getting down to 125.
“I stopped drinking pop and had to count calories,” Dorrell said. “I would go to practice and work really hard. Then I would go to class. In the morning I would have a Granola bar or an egg. I go to practice. After practice I go home and fix some chicken with carrots or broccoli steamers. I would have that everyday. I would maintain that diet.”
Dorrell said his diet has given him more energy and is seeing the results.
“I can go out there and compete with the other guys,” Dorrell said.
Oliver said it was pretty easy to move up weights, adding he’s preparing for international competition.
“I think it’s a good move for me,” Oliver said. “I can focus on getting stronger and getting better in technique instead of weight.”
Oliver said he didn’t have to do anything special but just increase food intake and weight room activity.
“I’m lifting more and making sure I’m increasing my strength,” Oliver said. “I just increased the amount of protein in my diet. Gaining the weight really wasn’t a problem. It was a really good fit and more of my match for weight.”
So far this season, Oliver is 12-0 and said he is comfortable at the weight he is and glad he doesn’t have to worry about weight.
“Life is good now that I’m at 149,” Oliver said. “Eating three to four times a day and not worried about weight as much. Even thinking about the competition, wrestling bigger guys, it’s good moving up two weight classes. Bigger guys don’t move around as much and it’s slower pace. I try to keep that smaller weight style. As I move up, I start working on my hand fighting skills also.”
Smith said both Dorrell and Oliver have handled their weight well.
“This isn’t the time of year where people go backwards,” Smith said. “Late in January there is a tendency to go in the wrong direction. For Dorrell, You can’t get tired of maintaining your weight and watching your intake. For Oliver, you can’t get tired of lifting, eating too much and keeping your calorie count up. It’s a matter of sustaining your discipline for the season.”
