TEMPE, Ariz. —
The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team lit up the scoreboard against Arizona State, winning every bout it competed to win the dual, 44-6, on Sunday in Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
“ASU is a better team than what the score showed,” coach John Smith said. “We expected a tougher match at heavyweight, and some of their better guys didn’t wrestle. I think we wrestled well today.”
The Cowboys (11-0) forfeited the 141 pound match to give the Sun Devils their only points of the day.
All but two of the Cowboys’ wins resulted in bonus points, including four falls.
With the dual starting at 149 pounds, Jordan Oliver put the first six points for the team with a fall over Preston McCalmon in 4:58. Pins followed at 165 pounds from Tyler Caldwell, 174 pounds from Chris Perry and 285 pounds from Alan Gelogaev.
Caldwell delivered a dominant performance with a pin over Rush Hall of ASU in 2:44, earning his fifth of the season. Chris Perry spent even less time on the mat, pinning Ray Waters in 48 seconds. The last pin of the day came at heavyweight from Gelogaev in 1:26 over All-American and 18th-ranked Levi Cooper.
Alex Dieringer and Chris Chionuma wrestled tough matches at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively. No. 10 Dieringer defeated Joel Smith, 4-1. Chionuma defeated Kevin Radford for the second time this season with a 6-3 decision.
At the lower weights, Eddie Klimara and Tyler Dorrell closed out the dual with consecutive major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Klimara defeated Dalton Miller 13-5, and Dorrell earned a 12-3 win over Ares Carpio.
The additional six points for the Cowboys came from an Arizona State forfeit at 197 pounds.
Oklahoma State has a pair of road matches next weekend when it travels to Columbia, Mo. to take on No. 7 Missouri on Feb. 1. The Cowboys will then travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Big 12 opponent Iowa State.
