STILLWATER, Okla. —
It’s sometimes difficult to find a seat in Boone Pickens Stadium when the Oklahoma State football team plays at home. It’s going to be even harder to find a seat to watch Saturday night’s game against Arizona.
The game will be televised by DISH Network on channel 413, but finding a DISH is something of a rarity in Stillwater with most local bars carrying DirectTV or Suddenlink.
In fact, after contacting several area bars and restaurants only Palomino’s, Freddie Paul’s Steakhouse and Ice House will be showing the game.
“My phone has been ringing all morning with people looking for some place to watch the game,” Willie’s Saloon manager Joe Farmer said. “It’s not going to be good for business, but there’s not much we can do about it. I’m sure a lot of places will try to have it on the radio, but I’m not even sure if I can get it on the radio at this point.”
What may be a loss for some restaurants and bars could be a huge profit for three Stillwater’s restaurants.
“We think a lot of people will stay because we’ve already got a lot of calls asking about whether or not we’re going to have the game on,” Palomino’s manager Ramon Villasenor said.
Normally Palomino’s and Freddie Paul’s would close at 10 p.m. on a typical Saturday. This Saturday, they will stay open until the game ends, allowing the anticipated drove of fans to watch the complete game.
“We’re going to stay open just for the game,” Villasenor said. “We know we’re going to get a lot of people that want to watch the game and we want them to come out and have a good time. They can come here, find a seat and enjoy the game with other fans.”
“We were going to close early but when we started getting phone calls about it we decided we needed to stay open,” Freddie Paul’s manager Regina Galfetti said. “We’re all Cowboys fans, so, of course, we’re going to stay open until the game’s over.”
Finding a seat will be the trick.
Palomino’s isn’t accepting reservations and Villasenor encourages fans to show up early to find the best seats near one of eight TVs at the bar.
The restaurant also will have televisions in the dining area that will showcase the game.
“We want to be sure that everybody can see the game, no matter where they sit,” he said.
Galfetti said Freddie Paul’s is taking reservations and her phone has been ringing off the hook with people reserving tables.
“It’s been mainly for bigger tables with groups of eight or nine,” Galfetti said. “But we do encourage people to call and make reservations to ensure that they have a seat.”
As far as whether or not those establishments without DISH will see a hit, J.R. Murphy’s manager David Hettel said he isn’t sure how it will affect business.
“We have Suddenlink, so we’re not able to watch it,” Hettel said. “I myself would love to watch it. But I have no doubts that whenever the game’s over everybody will be coming here to have a good time. We’ll be prepared for a late crowd. We always have a good crowd later in the evening anyway. It shouldn’t affect us too much.”
