IRVING, Texas —
Three Oklahoma State Cowboys were named to the 2013 Preseason All-Big 12 team, announced Wednesday by the league office. Junior receiver Josh Stewart was the lone representative for the explosive OSU offense, while seniors Calvin Barnett and Shaun Lewis earned first-team honors on defense as voted on by the media representatives who cover the Big 12 Conference.
Stewart, a native of Denton, Texas, is one of two first-team receivers honored. He is coming off a first-team All-Big 12 performance a year ago after finishing the 2012 season with a team-high 1,210 yards on 101 receptions. Stewart, who was fourth in the league in receiving yards as a sophomore, has also been named to the 2013 Biletnikoff Award watch list.
Barnett, a native of Tulsa, earned first-team honors on the defensive line. He is coming off an impressive first season at OSU when he was named the 2012 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and earned All-Big 12 honors. Barnett finished with 30 tackles, including 24 solos, and led the team with 8.0 tackles for loss. He has also been named to the preseason watch lists for the Lombardi Award, Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award and Outland Trophy.
Lewis, a middle linebacker from Missouri City, Texas, is a first-team all-league selection at linebacker. He has also been named to the Nagurski Trophy watch list. Lewis was a second-team all-league pick last season after finishing the year with 58 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.
The league was to release the preseason rankings by the media Thursday morning.
The Cowboys, who finished 8-5 last year and 5-4 in Big 12 play, will open their season Aug. 31 against Mississippi State in the inaugural Texas Kickoff Classic at Houston’s Reliant Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.
