STILLWATER, Okla. —
The Oklahoma State football players may not have to worry about practices, meetings or game-film this weekend with the coaches giving them four days off. But according to the players, they won’t be too far from the football field.
“Wherever I’m at, I’m going to be watching a lot of football,” OSU cornerback Justin Gilbert said. “I won’t be out goofing around or anything. I’ll just kick back, relax and watch some games.”
With the bye week, many Cowboy players plan on spending their Saturday watching college football instead of playing. And the biggest game on the radar for the Cowboys is none other than the Big 12 Conference marquee match-up — No. 15 Kansas State at No. 6 Oklahoma.
“That will be one that I’ll most definitely be watching. I’ll probably watch that whole game,” Gilbert said.
One of the benefits of watching that contest is it will give the OSU players a good look at two teams they will be facing later on in the Big 12 season.
“For a team that loves the game so much, it’s kind of tough to have a bye week because you want to play so bad,” OSU receiver Josh Stewart said. “But then again, it’s a good deal because we get to practice hard and get to see what some of those other teams look like and see what they do and see what we need to do to beat them. It’s a just a good way to get ahead.”
As far as where several of those players will be watching the games, quarterback J.W. Walsh and Stewart will take a road trip back home to Denton, Texas, after their breakout game against Louisiana-Lafeyette.
“We’re going to go home and try a few high school football games and go visit some of my old coaches at Denton Guyer and just hang with the family,” Stewart said.
While Walsh already spent some time with family after his big game against the Ragin’ Cajuns, he said it’s mom’s home cooking that he is most looking forward to when back home.
“She can cook some good food and every time I come home she always cooks for me,” Walsh said. “So I’ll be looking forward to that.”
Stewart said it’s likely that the two Denton natives will spend Saturday watching the games together.
“We’re going to be watching college football games all day. I’m pretty sure his dad or somebody in my family will be cooking and we’ll watch football,” Stewart said. “I’m ready for it.”
