OSU tennis aims to snag Big 12 title

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team will look to capture the Big 12 title when it starts play on Friday at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Forth Worth, Texas.

The Cowgirls last won the championship in 2003 and earned a bye as the second seed. OSU will play either No. 7 Kansas State or No. 10 West Virginia at 3 p.m. Friday. The Cowgirls beat Kansas State 5-2 on March 30 and swept West Virginia on April 5.

“We’re focusing a lot on doubles,” coach Chris Young said. “I think the doubles’ point is going to be key. When we beat Baylor last year, the doubles point was important. When we beat Texas this year, the doubles point was important. … For us to be successful, the doubles point is going to be key and not giving points away.”

On Tuesday, Katarina Adamovic and Maria Alvarez were named Big 12 singles champions. Adamovic played No. 4 singles and went 6-3 this season. Alvarez went 6-0 in the No. 6 singles. Young said the girls had a good season.

“It is rewarding for them and their efforts,” Young said. “We had a lot of girls that did well and had a lot of depth in the lineup this year.”

Viktoriya Lushkova finished third in No. 1 singles with a 6-2 record. Megan McCray was a victory short of the No. 2 singles title. Kanyapat Narattana and Lushkova finished second in No. 1 doubles. Carla Tur Mari and Alvarez tied for second in No. 2 doubles.

If the Cowgirls (13-7, 7-2) win they face either Texas or TCU. Oklahoma State beat TCU 5-2 on March 21 and defeated Texas 4-3 on April 13. OSU enters the Big 12 tournament, ranked No. 25.

“We’ve come a long ways especially from the end of February after the Blue-Gray Classic when we were 4-5,” Young said. “We won nine of our next 11 matches. … We lost some tough matches early but with the expectation of our last match, we’ve pulled out a lot of close matches. Our girls have come a long way mentally and hopefully that pays off in the postseason.”
