Cowgirls tennis tops Sooners in Bedlam

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team, led by an impressive performance by sophomore Meghan Blevins, knocked off the 36th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in an intense 4-3 match on Senior Day in Stillwater Saturday.

The Cowgirls (13-7, 5-4 Big 12) took the lead early by notching victories on doubles courts two and three to take the doubles point. Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen fought back after trailing 7-4 on two to eventually take the match in a tiebreaker and clinch the point for Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls added a point to their lead when junior Kanyapat Narattana defeated Oklahoma’s Whitney Wofford, 6-2, 6-0 on four. Shortly after, however, the Sooners would put themselves on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cowgirl Karyn Guttormsen on six.

Oklahoma tied the match at two after Mia Lancaster took down Oklahoma State senior C.C. Sardinha, 6-3, 6-3, on three.

After the two straight Sooner wins, freshman Maria Alvarez recorded a crucial point for the Cowgirls, defeating Abby Melrose in the fifth spot, 6-2, 7-5, despite trailing much of her second set.

Malika Rose lost a tough match on court one to Oklahoma’s Hermon Brhane in three sets, allowing the Sooners to tie the match at three.

Blevins notched an impressive triumph over Oklahoma’s Whitney Ritchie, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4), in an epic match to record the Cowgirls’ fourth point and finish off the Sooners.

“It was a great match,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “It’s tough to put into words. To think that the doubles point was a key point in the match, and it could have been so easy for the girls to put that one in the bank and move onto singles. We just had things go our way and made some good tactical decisions that really changed the momentum. Our girls stepped up and made plays when they needed to.”

The Cowgirls will travel to Norman this weekend to compete in the Big 12 championships.
