OSU softball splits first two games in Red Desert Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah —  The Oklahoma State Cowgirls softball team split their opening games of the season with a 2-1 extra—inning victory over Weber State and a 3-2 loss to Seattle in the Red Desert Classic.

Against Weber State, Oklahoma State senior pitcher Kat Espinosa didn’t give up a hit for more than five innings. The Lady Wildcats didn’t get their first hit until the sixth inning off of OSU junior Simone Freeman.

The game was scoreless through all seven innings. Shelby Davis was placed on second in the top of the eighth and scored on a single by Ari Morrison. Shannon Kaufman scored a second run during a double play. Weber State scored its only run on a ground out.

Freeman earned the victory, pitching the last three innings and struck out four.

In the second game, a pair of doubles by Seattle’s Brianna Guerrero and Rogin Hardy put the Cowgirls in a early 2-0 hole. Oklahoma State got a run back in the bottom half with an RBI double by clean-up hitter Tiffany Mikkelson. Hardy struck again in the top of the third with a solo home run to centerfield.

Oklahoma State rallied in the bottom half with a RBI double by Tarah Ettinger. Despite not coming out on top in the runs department, the Cowgirls out hit Seattle 9-6. Freeman started and pitched the first three innings, taking the loss. Espinosa pitched the rest of the game.

The Cowgirls continue play in the Red Desert Classic Saturday against Colorado State at noon and Utah Valley at 5 p.m. central standard time.
