FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. —
Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team rebounded from a tough second round with a 292 closing score on Saturday at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional at Blessings Golf Club to secure the 66th NCAA Championship berth in the 67-year history of the program.
The Cowboys shaved 12 shots off their 304 tally during the second round, posting a 4-over third round to finish fourth and grab one of the regional’s five qualifying spots. OSU’s third-round score was the second lowest on the day to Illinois’ 1-over 289. The Cowboys finished at 882, 18-over, and two shots behind Texas for third. Illinois claimed the regional title at 863, while Arkansas was second at 866. Kent State grabbed the fifth spot at 892.
SMU’s Mario Clemens won the event with a 213 total after finishing with a 73.
OSU had a pair of players log top-10 finishes with junior Kevin Dougherty tying for fifth place at 216 and freshman Jordan Niebrugge tying for 10th at 219.
Dougherty notched the squad’s round of the day, firing a 2-under 70 to move up 12 spots into the top five. After a quick start with birdies on two of his first three holes, Dougherty moved to 3-under par for the day with a birdie at the sixth and made the turn at 2-under 35. He made his lone bogey of the inward nine at the 11th, but countered with his fourth birdie of the day at the 16th.
The finish tied for his best of the season. He also tied for fifth place at the Linger Longer Invitational.
Niebrugge logged the fifth top 10 of his rookie season after closing with a 74.
Junior Ian Davis tied for 14th place at 220 after closing with a 77, while juniorTalor Gooch moved up 21 spots into a tie for 32nd place at 227 after posting a 71.
Sophomore Patrick Winther finished alone in 65th place at 244 after signing for an 81.
The Cowboys will seek their 11th national title when they compete at the NCAA Championship at The Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia from May 28-June 2.
