Media picks Pokes to win Big 12 in preseason football poll

STILLWATER, Okla. — For the first time in the history of the Big 12 Conference, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are the preseason favorites to win the league’s football championship.

OSU tops the preseason media poll announced today by the conference office. The Cowboys garnered a league-high 15 first-place votes and earned 365 points to outdistance Oklahoma’s 355 points.

In 2011, Oklahoma State was picked to finish third in the preseason, but went on to earn its first league title. In 2010, Oklahoma State was picked for fifth in the six-team Big 12 South, but the Cowboys shared the division title. OSU’s previous best in the preseason voting came in 1998 when the Cowboys were tabbed for second in the Big 12 South.

Six schools picked up first-place votes in the 2013 preseason balloting.

Oklahoma, which shared last year’s Big 12 title with Kansas State, was picked second with eight first-place votes and 355 points.

TCU was picked third with nine first-place votes, one more than Texas.

Baylor got two first-place votes for fifth, ahead of Kansas State, which got the remaining first-place vote. Texas Tech, West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas round out the preseason poll.

With Oklahoma State being voted No. 1 in the preseason poll, it marks the first time since 1998 that Texas or Oklahoma were not favored to win the conference. In 1998, Texas A&M was voted first in the preseason media poll.
