Cowboys fall to fourth on second day of regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. —

Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team slipped one spot into fourth place at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional on Friday after posting a 304 during its second round at BlessingsGolf Club.

The Cowboys began the day in third place and a shot out of second before carding their 16-over score at the par-72, 7,251-yard layout. Through 36 holes, OSU stands at 14-over 590 and seven shots behind Texas for third. Arkansas moved into the lead after a 283 gave the host Razorbacks a 573 total. One shot off the lead and alone in second place is Illinois.

Three players shared the individual lead with SMU’s Mario Clemens, Arkansas’ Austin Cook and Stephen F. Austin’s Mitchell McLeroy standing at 4-under 140.

Junior Ian Davis posted the Cowboys’ round of the day, finishing with a 1-under 71. His tally moved him from a tie for 11th into a deadlock for sixth place at143. Davis opened with a birdie and moved back to level par with a bogey two holes later. He strung together five consecutive pars before making the turn at 1-under 36 after posting a birdie at the par-5 ninth.

Davis’ inward nine saw him log three birdies and three bogeys in a seven-hole stretch as he eventually wound up at even-par 35 to remain 1-under of the day.

Freshman Jordan Niebrugge entered play tied for second after an opening 67, but finished the day tied for 11th at 145 after signing for a 78 during his second round.

Junior Kevin Dougherty posted his second consecutive 73 to move into a tie for 17th place at 146, while fellow junior Talor Gooch’s 82 gave him a 156 total and tied him for 53rd.

Sophomore Patrick Winther finished alone in 66th at 163 after turning in an 82.

The Cowboys will look to secure one of the regional's five qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship when they begin their final round tomorrow at 7:50 a.m. (CST). OSU will be grouped with Kent State and Tulsa.
