Anderson helps U.S. to big win at University Games

Oklahoma State junior forward James Anderson scored seven points Friday to help the United States to a convincing 87-40 win over Finland at the 2009 Men’s World University Games, held in Belgrade, Serbia.

The game was the first for the United States, who went 2-1 in exhibition games leading up to the tournament. Finland fell to 1-1.

Anderson scored his seven points in nine minutes of playing time. The Cowboy standout also added four rebounds and an assist while going

2-for-3 from both the field and the free throw line.

Anderson also hit one of two key 3-pointers late in the first quarter that saw the U.S. take a 21-12 advantage.

The U.S. led 29-19 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half, but with four straight points from fellow Big 12 member Craig Brackins of Iowa State, the U.S. outscored Finland 10-0 for a 39-19 halftime lead. They inceased the margin to 50-23 early in the second half.

The U.S. then closed the door on Finland in the fourth quarter, holding them to just 1 of 15 shooting from the field and ended the game on a 21-0 run.

Brackins finished the game with 12 points and tied for team-high honors with Villanova’s Corey Fisher. Talor Battle of Penn State added 11 points while Purdue’s Robbie Hummel chipped in 10.

All 12 U.S. members scored in the game.

The U.S. next plays South Korea today at 1 p.m. (CDT) in the final game of its pool before second-round pool play begins on Monday.
