STILLWATER, Okla. —
Oklahoma State running back Herschel Sims, one of the prized recruits in the Cowboys’ 2010 recruiting class, has been dismissed from the team for violating team rules.
Coach Mike Gundy announced Sims’ dismissal Friday but did not elaborate.
According to multiple sources, the dismissal stems from an incident involving a miscommunication about money between Sims and freshman linebacker Jeremiah Tshimanga. Sims allegedly took $700 out of Tshimanga’s bank account without permission on April 27, according to an incident report filed with the OSU police department on May 18.
The incident report did not give Sims’ name, but rather a description of a 20-year-old man matching Sims’ description and birthdate.
“I do know that the case is still under investigation,” OSU police department Captain Richard Atkins said. “There has been some discussion with the Payne County district attorney, but I don’t know what stage they’re at. They do have a suspect, but they want to make sure all the information is correct before charges are filed.”
The sophomore from Abilene, Texas, ran for 242 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns during the Cowboys’ run to the Big 12 championship as a freshman, as he served as the team’s third-string running back. He was still in that position during spring practice, with starter Joseph Randle and backup Jeremy Smith both returning.
Sims was recruited out of Abilene High School, running for 2,352 yards while leading his team to the Class 5A state championship as a junior.
The Associated Press contributed to the report.
