No. 12 Cowgirls hope to tame Lady Wildcats

STILLWATER, Okla. — For all its success over the past few years, it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly six years since the Oklahoma State University women’s basketball team walked out of Bramlage Coliseum with a win.

The Cowgirls (14-2, 3-2 in Big 12) hope to buck that trend when they face Kansas State at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan, Kan.

“My whole focus and line of thought is, you prepare well every day, you do things on a daily basis and the wins will take care of themselves,” Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said.

Oklahoma State comes into Wednesday’s game playing some of its best basketball of the season. The Cowgirls are riding a three-game winning streak — including a win against Texas in Austin — but for whatever reason, wins against Kansas State have been hard to get.

Kansas State has won the last three meetings, including last year’s game in Manhattan. The loss extended the Cowgirls’ losing streak to a season-long four games and seemed to be a low point in Oklahoma State’s season.

Now Oklahoma State is riding high on the wave of momentum, winning the last three conference games. Kansas State just snapped its three-game losing streak with a win over TCU Saturday.

“We just have to go out and play our game,” Oklahoma State junior point guard Tiffany Bias said. “We can’t really worry about the other teams and what they’re doing. I mean, yeah, we played great against Iowa State, but we could come out and play just as bad against Kansas State. You can’t get too high or too low.”

The key for Oklahoma State will be stopping Kansas State’s Brittney Chambers and the vaunted Wildcats’ 3-point attack. Chambers is second in the Big 12 with 19.1 points per game, while the Wildcats are second in the Big 12 with 7.8 3-pointers per game

“We just have to keep doing what we’ve been doing defensively,” Bias said. “We knew coming in that (Iowa State) had players that could shoot the ball. We were able to get out there and guard them. I thought our defense played well, and when your defense plays well you’re going to have a lot of success.”

The table may have turned from the last time Oklahoma State visited Bramlage Coliseum, but the Cowgirls know getting a win on the road will be anything but easy.

“This league is so tough,” Littell said. “If you’re able to steal a win on the road, that certainly helps your chances. But the big thing is to protect your home court. So far, we’ve done that.”
