A senior Stillwater police officer’s decision to retire could save the jobs of two other officers.
Master Police Officer II Scott Stookey says he will retire at the end of next month. His senior status puts his compensation at a level that could cover much of the expense of retaining two entry-level officers targeted for layoff.
Throughout contract negotiations, arbitration, layoff talks and City Council action, the divide between our city management and our unionized police department grew to a chasm.
Scott Stookey is giving his union and his managers a chance to bridge that chasm and keep police officers on the street.
Police officers put their lives on the line every day. Looks like off the street, too, Stookey can be a hero to his community. Let’s hope the police union leaders and city management follow his lead.
