Jamie Payne and John Killam of Stillwater have been selected to join 50 other Oklahomans as part of Leadership Oklahoma’s 26th annual class.

A class is selected each year from a wide geographic base representing diverse backgrounds.

Members will meet monthly and visit Lawton, Ada, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Stillwater, McAlester, Guymon and Broken Bow to discuss social, environmental and economic complexities of the state in order to stimulate inquiry, analysis and solutions for the public good, organizers said.

•After graduating from Oklahoma State University with a dual degree in journalism and broadcasting and an honors degree in Spanish with an international studies emphasis, Stillwater native Evan Black, the daughter of Penny Black and the late Floyd Black, lived, worked and studied abroad in various Spanish-speaking countries.

In April, Evan participated in a Rotary Foundation Group Study Exchange in Brazil.  For six weeks, Black, along with a team representing the Rotary District 7450 of Pennsylvania, had the opportunity to experience Brazil's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas.

Black represented the Rotary Club of Philadelphia on this unique exchange that started in Brazil’s capital of Brasília.

As a former Fulbright grant recipient to Chile, Black had the opportunity to visit the Fulbright Commission of Brazil to discuss current issues and the future of international education, exchange and collaboration between the United States and Brazil.

Other site visits included Itamaraty, the Brazilian Ministry of International Relations, as well as numerous international organizations, multinational companies and educational and cultural non-profits.

Black’s late father was a founding member of the Frontier Rotary Club of Stillwater, making this opportunity to represent the United States and Rotary abroad even more meaningful.

After returning from Brazil, Black will continue studying Portuguese at Middlebury College’s Portuguese Language School on the Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace.

The Kathryn Davis Fellowship is designed to address today's critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States.

In the fall, Black will return to Philadelphia to complete her master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania in intercultural communications.
