Q5: Locking your car protects valuables

STILLWATER, Okla. — If the nice weather has got people out and about, police remind residents that thieves are too. Stillwater Police Department Capt. Randy Dickerson talks about auto burglaries in town and what to do to stop thefts.

1 What is the most stolen item(s) in auto burglaries?

Mostly these type crimes target CDs, money, stereos, cellphones, lap tops etc. If they come across guns or other valuables, obviously they will take them.

2 Why are auto burglaries a common crime?

A couple of things; they are very commonly outside and accessible on a street or driveway and most importantly, many people leave their car doors unlocked. Many of our car burglars have stated they just roam neighborhoods, stealing from the unlocked cars.

3 How can people protect themselves from auto burglaries?

Lock your car! Do not leave valuables in plain sight, car alarms. Most auto burglaries are committed by kids or young adults and most of these perpetrators are not going to overcome a locked car.

4 When the Lock It or Lose it campaign ended, what did police learn from its efforts?

That locking your car in most cases prevents it from being burglarized, not always, but mostly.

5 Have police considered implementing other auto burglary campaigns in Stillwater?

If we could get people to lock their cars, auto burglaries would be reduced exponentially.
