STILLWATER, Okla. — Kay Murphy is co-president of the Stillwater League of Women Voters. The league is hosting a public forum regarding Stillwater Public Schools budget cuts in response to decreased state funding. The forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Stillwater Community Center auditorium.
1 Can you give some background on the League of Women Voters and what it does?
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization established to promote political responsibility through informed and active citizenship. We sponsor candidate forums and public issue forums and this forum falls in the last category. Being informed with facts is the basis for our studies.
2 Why did the league schedule a forum focusing on Stillwater Public Schools?
The League was approached by people from the community to present a forum on the Stillwater Public Schools proposed budget priorities. We want to allow the opportunity for factual information to be presented. There appear to be rumors and misunderstandings circulating and hopefully we can address and clarify those points.
3 How will the forum work and who will be answering questions?
After an introduction that sets the ground rules, the moderators will ask questions that have been submitted from the audience and by email. Superintendent Dr. Ann Caine will answer questions or turn to her staff to respond to the question. Although we usually time responses, instead the moderators will try to move answers along so we can cover as many questions as possible.
4 How can people participate in the forum or submit questions about the school budget cuts?
First it is important to know that all questions are anonymous. The audience will have the opportunity to write questions on a 3x5 card and League members will pick them up and give them to the moderators. If a person cannot attend they can email questions to firstname.lastname@example.org. People will have to trust that I understand the rules of confidentiality.
5 Your forums are usually televised. Will this forum be broadcast?
The Stillwater Community Center does not have the equipment to televise the forum. If we can find someone that wants to video/film the forum, then it can be uploaded to a website for people to view.
