Q5: Karman Korner celebrates 20 years

STILLWATER, Okla. — Whitney Johnson is the store manager of Karman Korner Resale Shop, 819 S. Main, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this week.

1 Why did Karman Korner start in Stillwater?

Karman Korner Resale Shop opened March 19, 1994, to help defray hospice expenses of Judith Karman Hospice patients. As a nonprofit hospice, JKH absorbs the cost of care given to patients who have no insurance. Medicare only reimburses JKH less than $132 a day per patient. Proceeds from Karman Korner help ensure our patients the quality care this community has come to expect.

2 Who operates Karman Korner and how many people work and volunteer at the organization in Stillwater?

Karman Korner is operated by four employees and more than 50 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. Staff members are Whitney Johnson, Jodi Holt, Darlene Shell and Steve Carlson. The volunteers take shifts from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteers work as cashiers, accept donations, restock, price and clean. On Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers and the staff clean and restock the store. Call 405-377-8012 or 405-377-6410 for more information about volunteering.

3 How are you planning to celebrate Karman Korner’s 20th anniversary?

Stop by the store on Wednesday for Customer Appreciation Day where we will have punch and cookies made by our volunteers. Also, we have a few small giveaways and targeted sale items.

4 What can bargain hunters find at Karman Korner?

We have special prices weekly on clothing. Karman Korner offers kitchen merchandise, furniture, toys, books, children’s clothing, jewelry and shoes. Just in time for spring break, you can find swim suits, Bermuda shorts, wedding and prom dresses.

5 Where do the funds go generated from donated items at Karman Korner?

One of the goals of Karman Korner is to provide funds that will benefit patients of Judith Karman Hospice. We like to say the donations we receive transform into medical needs, comfort care and personal items for our Judith Karman Hospice patients. We accept donations from the community from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
