STILLWATER, Okla. — The Animal Connections Smithsonian exhibit will arrive in Stillwater Wednesday on 18 wheels. The traveling exhibit is free. Jennifer Schommer, assistant director of public relations for the Smithsonian, explains more about the exhibit.
1 What is the purpose of this exhibit?
We wanted to highlight the important work that veterinarians do. We wanted to also point out and shed a light on the incredible relationship that people have with animals.
2 What will visitors see at the exhibit?
There are no animals on the truck itself. That would be extremely difficult to do. But we’re looking at animals in the home, on the farm, in the zoo and in the wild.
3 How is the tour set up on the expandable 18-wheeler?
We have a team of drivers. They drive the truck, they set up the truck and then they’re also on the truck to serve as guides for visitors.
4 How can visitors learn from the exhibit?
We have a couple of interactive activities where people can learn what might be the perfect pet by taking a pet quiz. There are also videos about how to approach animals, like service dogs.
5 How was Animal Connections created and by whom?
We partnered with the American Veterinary Medical Association to celebrate their 150th anniversary last year.
