STILLWATER, Okla. — Jimmy Oliver is a Stillwater attorney who serves as the Payne County Bar Association Law Day chairman.
1 Can you explain to us what Law Day is?
Law Day is held nationally on May 1 of each year. The Payne County Bar Association uses Law Day as an opportunity to recognize the role of courts and attorneys in our democracy. The 2014 Law Day theme is American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters. This theme is meant to explore the importance of voting and of ensuring that our nation’s election laws and practices permit the broadest, least restrictive access to the ballot box.
2 What kinds of questions may people ask during the Ask A Lawyer program?
The county bar association will participate in the statewide OETA Ask a Lawyer program from 7-9 p.m. May 1. The local number for this event is (405) 743-3770. We will also host a walk-in Ask a Lawyer event at the Stillwater Public Library from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 8. Attorneys will be available to answers questions about all areas of law including criminal, family, estate planning and landlord/tenant.
3 How does Law Day benefit Payne County?
This year’s Law Day has focused on outreach to the Payne County youth. Lawyers have been speaking with high school classes to advise them about the ramifications of turning 18 and how that changes how they are treated by the legal system. This year we have a group of middle school students touring the courthouse where they will see the jail, watch a drug dog demonstration and speak to the district Attorney and judges about the legal system.
4 Why is it important that people know their legal rights?
The legal system can be confusing and overwhelming to many people. Often people are unaware that they could give up important protections and rights when they try to navigate the legal system on their own. The first step in protecting your rights is to know what they are.
Law Day provides an opportunity for lawyers to give free advice to citizens to assist them in this task.
5 Where could someone interested in knowing more about the legal system in Oklahoma find more information?

The Oklahoma Bar Association website at www.okbar.org has a great public resource page with information about many legal topics.
