Students observe See You at the Pole

Several dozen students gathered in a circle around a flagpole outside Stillwater Junior High School to worship Wednesday morning.

Students throughout the district and the country prayed together before school as part of nationwide event See You at the Pole.

At the junior high, students started by singing “Here I am to Worship,” then continued with more songs, prayer and scripture readings.

“Getting together gives us encouragement to help live out our faith in school where a lot of people don’t have the same beliefs as us,” said ninth-grader Madi Stewart. “It’s amazing just to know that all these people come out just because they share the same God as me.”

Students prayed for direction and guidance for their teachers, classmates and President Barack Obama.

Eighth-grader Rachel Wilson was nervous about coming out to the pole because she didn’t know what to expect. She said she felt reassured when she and her friend, Angela Fitch, showed up and saw the crowd of students.

They prayed for the needs of others and the country, Wilson said.

“It feels really good,” she said.

About 30 students and 12 adults gathered in front of Richmond Elementary School before school to worship. Fifth-grader Macy Stokes organized the gathering.

She said hearing her sisters talk about the event last year inspired her to want to organize a way for her and her classmates to celebrate their love for God.

Her classmate Kade Killough wanted to help, so he brought an electrical cord, music and cups.

“I wanted to come out here today and show my faith in God and help other students who might not know him,” Killough said.

Ninth-grader Kristen Zacharias, said praying with other students was a powerful feeling.

“It feels so good to know that there are other people here who believe the same thing,” Zacharias said.
