Retired bishop to speak here

Retired United Methodist Bishop Fritz Mutti will preach at Highland Park United Methodist Church's 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

From 1992 to 2004, Mutti served as resident bishop of the Kansas area, which includes the entire state of Kansas, HPUMC Senior Pastor Derrek Belase said.

Before being elected bishop, he was a pastor, district superintendent and conference official in the Missouri annual conference, Belase said.

Since retirement, Mutti has served as bishop-in-residence at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City.

Saint Paul is one of 13 United Methodist seminaries in the United States.

In that role, Mutti advises students and teaches courses in United Methodist history and policy, Belase said.

Mutti and his wife, Etta Mae, have written a book titled "Dancing in Wheelchairs," which chronicles their life as parents who have lost two sons to AIDS, Belase said.

The Muttis are currently co-chairs of the United Methodist Church's Global AIDS Fund.

"We are so thankful that Bishop Mutti will be with us as we begin the season of Advent” Belase said. “He is a real spiritual leader and great preacher.”

Beelase said that during Mutti’s sermon, he will also address the recent pastoral letter from the UM College of Bishop's regarding caring for God's creation.

Call 372-8001 for more information. The church is at 524 N. Stallard.
