Senior Center Watch 02-15-14

Center offers many activities to enjoy

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is a warm and fun place to spend a cold winter day. The center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. You can participate in card games, exercise class, art class, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies and a music night.

The center will be hosting free income tax assistance by AARP-trained tax preparers every Monday through Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon until April 15. It is a first-come, first-serve basis. Sign in when you arrive. Bring last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Make sure to pick up a February calendar of events when you stop by. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends.

Monday — Enjoy pool playing with the women or get creative with the artist’s group starting at 9:30 a.m. The income tax preparers also arrive by then ready to help until noon. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set are available for use. The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players, and pool shooters.

Tuesday — Work off the winter blahs in a free exercise class called Sit ‘n Be Fit. The class begins at 9:30 a.m. and offers a low-impact, 45-minute workout that helps strengthen your muscles. Some are done while sitting and others are done while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls. Stay and practice line dancing. Tax assistance continues during the morning. In the afternoon, games include canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, pool/snooker and jigsaw puzzle solving.  

Wednesday — Women pool players get together again at 9:30 a.m. for a fun competition. Wii games are played on Wednesday morning at the same time. The tax preparers are working up tax returns. In the afternoon, games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played along with an movie at 2 p.m. The movie this week is a drama romance titled, “The Yellow Handkerchief” starring William Hurt.

Thursday — If you would like a free place to work off a few pounds and limber up, check out the exercise class Sit ‘n Be Fit. It begins at 9:30 a.m. AARP income tax help is still available from 9:30 a.m. to noon. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2 p.m., bingo begins. Everyone is a winner.

Friday — Pool playing and painting are on Friday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m. The women pool players have a good time lining up their shots and sharing friendly conversations. The painters will be at it again. Bring your painting supplies and get creative. Exercise equipment is also available for use. During the afternoon, games of canasta, Texas Hold’em and pool/snooker will be played.

Winners announced last week were for social bridge. Betty Barefoot placed first and Dollie McClary placed second. Duplicate bridge players did not meet.

  • Senior Center Watch 07-05-14

    The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a defensive driving class, Vehicle Accident Prevention, sponsored by Meridian Technology Center. This class could get you a discount on your vehicle insurance, so check it out with your insurance provider.
    The class will take place Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. An hour lunch break will be taken. Call or stop by to sign up.
