Senior Activity Center adds new programs

The Stillwater Senior Activity Center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over.

New activities have been added starting this month.

Make sure to pick up a June calendar of events when you stop by and check out the additions and changes that have been made in the scheduling of classes.

A walk in the park will kick off Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Senior participants can come to the center and check out how they can earn a free T-shirt by walking in Couch Park.

A water aerobics class will also begin Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stillwater Municipal Pool in Couch Park. Each session is $2 and is paid at the pool. Swimsuits are required and no shorts/shirts allowed.

Another day of bingo has also been added to the calendar.

It will now be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. Center hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m. for music night.

The facility is closed on weekends. Music night on Thursdays is a good evening outing to check out.

Monday: The week starts off with several free activities beginning with Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, women’s pool and a painting/crafting class at 9:30 a.m. The exercise class uses a chair for each person. Some exercises are done while sitting, but also a few are done by the chair, using it for support if needed. Stretchy bands, bouncing balls and hand weights are all utilized in the workout. The women pool players get in several rounds of friendly competitive games of 8-ball. Bring your pool stick or use one from the center and test your skills. The painting/crafting class is a social time to get together and get creative at a canvas or any other craft you want to bring in to work on while sharing ideas. At 10:30 a.m., a group of line dancers practice their moves. Check it out and get a powerful workout while having a blast. Afternoon games begin around 1 p.m. Bridge and canasta are popular card games. A coed 8-ball pool tournament will take place at 1 p.m. All seniors are invited to try out their pool shooting skills in the competition.

Tuesday: Wii bowlers are needed to join the fun on Tuesdays and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. This is played on a gaming system with each player in charge of their own controls. Walk in the park kicks off at 9:30 a.m. also. Sign up now and get started earning a free T-shirt. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set are available for use. Water aerobics sessions begin at 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the city pool on 12th Street in Couch Park. Cost is $2 per session. In the afternoon, games include canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pool/snooker and jigsaw puzzle solving. Bingo will now be played Tuesday at 2 p.m. in addition to the regular Thursday time.

Wednesday: Sit ‘n Be Fit begins at 9:30 a.m. The class offers a low-impact, 45-minute workout that helps strengthen and tone your muscles. Stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. The women pool players practice their pool shots again beginning at 9:30 a.m. In the afternoon, there are games of canasta, pool and snooker along with a 2 p.m. movie. The movie for this week is a comedy titled, “So Undercover.”

Thursday: The fun begins with Wii bowling at 9:30 a.m. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool and snooker. Don’t forget the water aerobics class at 12:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. a game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun. At 6 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music.

Friday: The exercise class, Sit ‘n Be Fit, is a free class offered at the center at 9:30 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The class can help you test your endurance and strengthen your muscles and give you a good workout. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. Other popular Friday morning activities are women’s pool playing and painting/crafts in the art class. These begin at 9:30 a.m.  Exercise equipment is also available for use. Afternoon games begin around 1 p.m. and consist of canasta, and pool or snooker.
