Senior Center Watch 01-05-13

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is ready to start a new year with many activities such as card games, exercise class, arts and crafts group, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies and a music night.

Friday is the January birthday potluck dinner. Bring a food dish to share or pay $3 per person. Come celebrate at noon with delicious food and fun fellowship.

Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. to pick up a January calendar of events. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday for music night. Call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Champions for competitive games last week were social bridge winners Cloyann Fent, Anna Cooper, and Wally Reynolds who all tied for first place. Darrell Davis was the Texas Hold’em champion. Dwight Wilkins won the men’s nine-ball pool tournament.

Highlights for this week include:

Monday: Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings women pool players come to the center to practice their pool shooting skills and take part in some fun competition starting at 9:30 a.m. An artist’s group arrives about the same time. They bring in their own supplies and help each other with ideas and questions they might have about their artwork. Other crafters are welcome to bring their projects and join the group, too. The center has an exercise room with exercise bikes and a weight set for senior use. The afternoon crowd arrives around 12:30 p.m. to play games of bridge, canasta, dominoes, pool/snooker and jigsaw puzzle solving.

Tuesday: Start your New Year’s resolution of getting in shape now by checking out the free exercise class Sit ‘n Be Fit at 9:30 a.m. This class is offered every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Afterward, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. This is a really good workout. In the afternoon, join the games offered from duplicate bridge to dominoes.

Wednesday: The women pool players will be at it again after the doors open at 9:30 a.m. They have a good time so bring your pool stick or use one from the center and join the fun. Wii games are played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time. An afternoon movie will be shown at 2 p.m. The movie, “Coach Carter,” is a basketball film based on true events.

Thursday: The free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class at 9:30 a.m. is a good toning workout for muscles. For more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. At 2 p.m., bingo is called. Music night begins again with the doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the band playing from 6-8:30 p.m.

Friday: The center opens at 9:30 a.m. and the women pool players are waiting at the door ready to practice their pool shots. The painting group is also there with their paints, brushes and canvases, eager to get creative and exchange ideas. Exercise equipment is also available for use.

The birthday pot-luck luncheon begins at noon followed by afternoon games.
