‘Fahrenheit 451’ book discussion slated Thursday

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will host a book review for the Stillwater Public Library’s One Book One Community project. Pat Jaynes will lead the discussion at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The book is “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. The community is invited to attend.

Competitive game champions last week were social bridge winners Dollie McClary, first, and Patricia Logan, second. Duplicate bridge winning partners were Al Perry and Lionel Raff, first. Lucy Robinson, Penny Sizemore, Murna Raff and Seham El Sharif; all tied for second. Vic Berryman won the men’s pool tournament. The highest score for Wii bowling was Dennis Morrow with Louella Harshman having the next highest score.

The center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Participate in card games, exercise class, art class, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies and a music night.

Free income tax assistance continues with AARP trained tax preparers helping from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday until April 15. Sign in for help when arriving. Assistance is on a first come, first served basis. Bring last year’s tax return if possible, along with all other necessary information and identification. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. to pick up a February calendar of events. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-8 p.m. Thursday for music night. Remember with the weather changes coming, if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed, then the Senior Activity Center will also be closed. Call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Monday: Women pool players come join the group on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 a.m. They enjoy several rounds of eight-ball and share lots of laughs together. Also, an artist’s group gets together on Monday and Friday mornings during the same time. They bring their own supplies and offer suggestive ideas for each other. The income tax preparers also arrive by then ready to help until noon. Exercise equipment including a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set are available for use, too. The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players, and pool shooters.

Tuesday: If it is time for you to get in shape, then try out the free exercise class called, Sit ‘n Be Fit, offered at the center. The class begins at 9:30 a.m. and offers a low impact, 45-minute workout that helps strengthen your muscles. Some are completed while sitting and others are executed while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls. Afterward, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. This will get you a really good workout!

Wednesday: Women pool players get together again at 9:30 a.m. for some friendly fellowshipping and fun competition.  Also, Wii games are played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time. The tax preparers will continue to help with tax returns. In the afternoon, games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played, along with an afternoon movie at 2:00 p.m.  The movie for this week is a high action drama entitled “White House Down” starring Jamie Fox.

Thursday:  AARP income tax help is still available from 9:30 a.m. to noon Check out the exercise class called Sit ‘n Be Fit. It begins at 9:30 a.m. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. Remember the 10:30 a.m. book review on the book, “Fahrenheit 451.” In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Friday: Pool playing and painting are activities that are popular on Friday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m. The women pool players have a good time lining up their shots and sharing friendly conversations. The painters will be at it again, also. Bring your painting supplies and get creative. Exercise equipment is also available for use.  During the afternoon, games of canasta, Texas Hold’em and a men’s pool tournament will be played.

    The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will celebrate August birthdays with a potluck luncheon at noon Friday. The theme for the luncheon will be a hamburger and hotdog cookout. Bring a food dish to share with the entrée or pay $3 per person and join the fun.

    The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a defensive driving class, Vehicle Accident Prevention, sponsored by Meridian Technology Center. This class could get you a discount on your vehicle insurance, so check it out with your insurance provider.
    The class will take place Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. An hour lunch break will be taken. Call or stop by to sign up.
