Senior Center Watch 02-03-13

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is hosting the monthly birthday luncheon at noon Friday. Stop by 1015 E. 12th to pick up a calendar of events. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday for music night. If the Stillwater Public Schools are closed for inclement weather then the Senior Activity Center will also be closed.

Call 405-747-8080 for more information about activities or if you are interested in joining a social or duplicate bridge group. Starting 9:30 a.m. Monday, trained AARP volunteer income tax preparers will figure income taxes, free of charge. Tax services are offered through April 15, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. No appointments are necessary. Services are on a first come first serve basis. Bring last year’s return if possible and all other necessary information, along with identification.

Monday: After the doors open at 9:30 a.m., women pool players gather around the tables for some fun competitive games of eight-ball. A group of artists come in with their art supplies and canvases to spend some time together expressing their creativity. There is also exercise equipment available which includes a treadmill, weight set and an exercise bike. AARP tax preparers volunteer 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The afternoon crowd plays various games such as bridge, canasta, dominoes and pool or snooker. A table is always set up with a puzzle to solve.

Tuesday: Take the opportunity to join a free exercise class held every Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to about 10:15 a.m. The “Sit ‘n Be Fit” class exercises are completed while sitting and some are executed while standing by your chair. Hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls are all utilized during the 45-minute workout. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing or Wii games. A pingpong table is available for use. In the afternoon, there is a choice of games. Veteran’s Affairs representatives visit from 1 to 2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paper work pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

Wednesday: Pool balls start falling again for the women pool players beginning at 9:30 a.m. A Wii interactive game set and a pingpong table are also available for use. Exercise equipment may also be utilized. Afternoon games begin around 1 p.m. The dramatic movie, Beasts of the Southern Wild will be shown at 2 p.m.

Thursday: Exercisers get started stretching again in the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class at 9:30 a.m. After class, you can play some Wii games or pingpong. A group of line dancers sometimes stay and have a good time stepping in time to the music. At 1 p.m., afternoon games begin. A men’s pool tournament will be held at 1 p.m. Bring your pool stick or use one provided by the center. At 2 p.m., bingo is called. Thursday evening, the doors open back up at 5:30 p.m. for a night of music. The musicians  grtune up and start playing country music at 6 p.m.

Friday: The women get out their pool sticks for some more friendly competition. The painting group also returns at 9:30 a.m. Painters bring their own supplies and share their time and ideas with other artists who visit the center. Exercise equipment is available for use, along with a pingpong table or Wii player. At noon, a potluck birthday luncheon will be held to celebrate all of the birthdays in February. Bring a dish or three dollars to anjoin in the celebration.

Last week’s bridge winners were Dollie McClary, first, and Barbara Geiser, second. Duplicate bridge winning partners were Betty Abernante and Seham El. Sherif, first.  Tying for second were Lew Taylor and Ina lee Abels, and Teresa Tanner and Laurie Schlobohn. The Texas Hold’em group met and the winners for the week were Lula Mae Davis and Chestine Crane.
