Senior Activity Center closed for Fourth of July

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be closed July 4 for the holiday.

The center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Some participants enjoy competitive games.

Champions announced for last week’s competitions include social bridge winners Dollie McClary, first, and Lynn Fent, second. Duplicate bridge winners were Al Perry and Lionel Raff, first, and Charles Foreman, Jane Anderson, Camille Johnston and Terry Miller; all tied for second place. Wii bowling champions for the week were Jean Hatcher, first, and Lee Arnswald, second. Vic Berryman won the pool tournament.

Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. to pick up a July calendar of events. The center is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday for music night. Music night on Thursdays is a good evening outing to check out.

It is not too late to get in the water aerobics class that meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the municipal pool from 12:30-1 p.m. This class will run through July 31 and only costs $2 each time you attend. Payment is made at the pool.

The Walk in the Park program is also popular. After 10 walks in Couch Park you earn a free T-shirt. Sign up today.

A defensive driving class will be offered Wednesday, July 9 from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. A lunch break will be taken from noon to 1 p.m.

The class is provided by Meridian Technology Center. Sign up at the center of call 405-747-8080 to register. Space is limited.

Check with your vehicle insurer to see if this class will qualify you for a discount on your insurance.

A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the class.

Event highlights this week include:

Monday: Several activities start the week off at 9:30 a.m. If you need a good exercise workout, you can’t beat the price for the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class. A few exercises are completed while sitting and some are executed while standing by a chair. It is a good workout that utilizes stretchy bands, bouncing balls, and hand weights. Women pool players get in several rounds of friendly, competitive games of 8-ball, also. Bring your pool stick or use one from the center and test your skills.

A painting/crafting class also meets. It is a social time to get together and get creative at a canvas or any other craft you want to bring in to work on while sharing ideas.

Also, at 10:30 a.m. a group of line dancers practice their moves. Check it out and get a powerful workout. Afternoon games begin around 1 p.m.

Bridge and canasta are popular card games played along with pool/snooker and puzzle solving.

Tuesday: The center’s Wii game system comes out Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Wii bowling is a popular game of the seniors. Each player is in control of his own game by holding the hand controller and trying to make strikes just like at a real bowling alley.

Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set are available for use, too.

Water aerobics meets at the Stillwater Municipal pool at 12:30 p.m. It is great exercise, and only $2 per session. In the afternoon, games include canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes and jigsaw puzzles.

A coed pool tournament will be held at 1 p.m.  Senior pool players are welcome to join the competitive fun.

Bingo players also meet up on Tuesday afternoons at 2 p.m.

Wednesday: Get in shape with the free exercise class or practice your pool shots with the women pool players during the morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. Stay and practice line dancing at 10:30 a.m.

Games of canasta, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie at 2 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama titled, “The Straight Story.”

Thursday: Try your hand out at Wii bowling Thursday at 9:30 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., water aerobics meets up at the city pool.

Get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool and snooker. At 2 p.m. bingo begins.

Starting at 6 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tapping country music.

Friday: The center is closed for the holiday.
