Senior Center Watch 03-15-14

Defensive driving class scheduled

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will offer a free defensive driving class from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24.

Class size is limited so call now or stop by to register.

Check with your vehicle insurance provider to see if you can receive a discount for taking the class.

Another free service offered is the income tax assistance provided by AARP trained preparers.

This will continue from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday until April 15.

Service is offered on first come, first served basis.

Sign in when arriving at the center. Bring last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification.

The center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. to pick up a March calendar of events.

Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-8 p.m. Thursday for music night.

Remember during inclement weather if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed then the Senior Activity Center will also be closed. Call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Monday: If you would like to learn to play pool or just sharpen up your pool playing skills come join the women during Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Or, if you are an artist, check out the painting class held every Monday and Friday during the same time.

They bring their own supplies and offer suggestive ideas for each other.

Exercise equipment available for use includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set.

The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players and pool shooters.

Tuesday: Another free class offered at the center is Sit ‘n Be Fit.

The free exercise class begins at 9:30 a.m. and offers a low impact, 45-minute workout that helps strengthen your muscles.

Some exercises are completed while sitting and others are executed while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls. Afterward, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing.

In the afternoon, games include canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, pool/snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving.  

Wednesday: Women pool players practice their pool shots again starting at 9:30 a.m. They may get in a few rounds of eight-ball, too.

Wii bowling is played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time.

Then, in the afternoon, games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie at 2 p.m.

The movie for this week is the historical drama “Winnie Mandela.”

Thursday: Don’t be a couch potato, come get in shape with Sit ‘n Be Fit.

The free exercise class begins at 9:30 a.m. It will give you a good workout stretching all the muscles. f you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun.

In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place.

Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Friday: Popular activities are women’s pool playing and painting in the art class. These begin at 9:30 a.m.

Exercise equipment is also available for use.

Afternoon games consist of canasta, Texas Hold’em and pool or snooker.

    The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a defensive driving class, Vehicle Accident Prevention, sponsored by Meridian Technology Center. This class could get you a discount on your vehicle insurance, so check it out with your insurance provider.
    The class will take place Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. An hour lunch break will be taken. Call or stop by to sign up.
