Senior Center Watch 03-22-14

Defensive driving class set

The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will offer a free defensive driving class from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

An instructor from Meridian Technology Center will teach the class. Everyone will receive a certificate after class that can be taken to vehicle insurance providers for possible discount qualifications.

Another free service offered is the income tax assistance provided by AARP trained preparers. Tax help continues  from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday until April 15.

Assistance is offered on a first come, first served basis. Sign in when you arrive. Bring last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification.

A presentation, “Navigating the Senior Network”, will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the center. Representatives from different senior service providers will be present for discussions, along with questions and answer sessions. They want to help find solutions that can improve quality of life issues. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over.

Competitive game champions last week included social bridge winners Penny Sizemore, first, and Barbara Geiser, second.  Duplicate bridge winners were Charles Foreman and Jane Anderson, first, and Penny Sizemore and Lucy Robinson, second. Texas Hold’em players were back at their game and winners during the week were Chestine Crane and Lula Mae Davis. Vic Berryman won the men’s pool tournament.

Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. to pick up a calendar of events. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday for music night. Remember during inclement weather if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed then the Senior Activity Center will also be closed. Call 405-747-8080 for more information.

Weekly highlights include:

Monday: Mornings are busy starting at 9:30 a.m. Women pool players begin playing several rounds of eight-ball. An art class comes in during the same time. They bring their own supplies and offer creative ideas to each other. The special defensive driving class will take place starting at 9:45 a.m. Exercise equipment includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes and a weight set available for use. The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players, along with more pool shooters.

Tuesday: Sit ‘n Be Fit is a free exercise program offered at the center every Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The class begins at 9:30 a.m. and offers a low impact, 45-minute workout that helps strengthen and tone up your muscles. Some exercises are completed while sitting and others are executed while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls. Afterward, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. This will get you a really good workout! In the afternoon, games include canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, pool/snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving.  

Wednesday: The pool sticks are picked up again by the women as they take aim beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wii bowling is played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time. They have a really good time. Come check it out! An afternoon movie begins at 2 p.m. The movie for this week is “Glory Road,” basketball movie based on a true events. Remember the “Navigating the Senior Network” discussion groups will also start at 2 p.m. Plan to attend to learn about resources that can help ease the stress of finding solutions that seniors face in life.

Thursday: It is spring time and time to think about getting in shape. Check out the free exercise class, Sit ‘n Be Fit. offered at the Center at 9:30 a.m. It will give you a good workout and stretching. If you would like more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Friday: Popular morning activities are women’s pool playing and painting in the art class. These begin at 9:30 a.m. Exercise equipment is also available for use. Afternoon games consist of canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool or snooker. A men’s pool tournament will be held during the afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. Come join the fun.

    The city of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a defensive driving class, Vehicle Accident Prevention, sponsored by Meridian Technology Center. This class could get you a discount on your vehicle insurance, so check it out with your insurance provider.
    The class will take place Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. An hour lunch break will be taken. Call or stop by to sign up.
