Senior Center Watch 01-20-13

Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Stop by 1015 E. 12th and pick up a January calendar of events. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday for music night. Remember during the winter if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed for inclement weather, the Senior Activity Center will also be closed.

Call 405-747-8080 if you are interested in joining a social or duplicate bridge group or to inquire about any other activities. Starting in February, trained AARP volunteer income tax preparers will figure income taxes, free of charge. Times are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday from Feb. 4 to April 15. No appointments are necessary with assistance  on a first come first serve basis. Bring last year’s return if possible and all other necessary information and identification.

Monday: Closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tuesday: Tone up with the free “Sit ‘n Be Fit” exercise class from 9:30 to about 10:15 a.m. Some exercises are completed sitting and some are executed while standing by a chair. Hand weights, stretch bands and bouncing balls are all utilized during the 45 minute workout. Afterward, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing or Wii games. A pingpong table is available for use, too. In the afternoon, there is a choice of games including canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, puzzle solving, snooker or pool. A Veteran’s Affairs representative comes in from 1 to 2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paper work you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

Wednesday: Women pool players start lining up their shots at 9:30 a.m. They have a lively time with lots of laughs. Come join the fun! A Wii interactive game set, pingpong table and exercise equipment is available for use. Afternoon games begin around 1 p.m. including canasta, dominoes, Texas Hold’em, pitch, pool and snooker. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to find a piece. The animated movie, “Ice Age — Continental Drift,” will be shown at 2 p.m.

Thursday: Get in shape with the free “Sit ‘n Be Fit” exercise class at 9:30 a.m. After class, play some Wii games or pingpong. A group of line dancers sometimes stay and have a good time stepping in time to the music. At 1 p.m. afternoon games such as canasta, dominoes, social bridge, pool, snooker and puzzle solving get started. At 2 p.m., bingo is called. A lot of laughs are always shared during this time. Don’t miss out on the good times. Thursday evening, the doors open back up at 5:30 p.m. for a night of music. The musicians set up and play some good ol’ country tunes at 6 p.m. Come tap your toes with everybody!

Friday: At 9:30 a.m., the women pool players are back again along with a painting group. Painters bring their own supplies and share their time and ideas with other artists. Exercise equipment is available for use, along with a pingpong table or Wii player. Check out the afternoon games of cards, pool, snooker, Texas Hold’em, dominoes and puzzle solving. A coed pool tournament is scheduled at 1 p.m. Men and women can both join the friendly competition.

Last week’s bridge winners were Norma Burk, first, and Mallory Owen, second. Duplicate bridge winning partners were Murna Raff and Betty Lowrey, first, and Penny Sizemore and Lucy Robinson, second. The Texas Hold’em group met with Allen Shields claiming the championship for the week.
